Overview

One common flame arrester configuration is mounted at the end of a storage tank vent pipe and is identified as an “END-OF-LINE” flame arrester. This arrester permits normal tank breathing, while preventing the flashback of an unconfined deflagration (the ignition of the vapor cloud in the open atmosphere) from flashing back past the arrester into the piping and the tank’s vapor space.

End-of-Line Deflagration Flame Arresters

END-OF-LINE CIRCULAR PLATE FLAME ARRESTERProtectoseal Series No. 670 / 6670 End-of-Line Deflagration Flame Arresters are installed where it is not necessary to conserve vapors but where low flash point liquids must be protected against fire and explosion from exterior sources of ignition. These flame arresters are mounted on the end of a vent pipe from the tank. Vapors are allowed to escape into the atmosphere and air can be drawn into the tank through the specially designed flame arrester grid assembly. If an ignition source outside the tank (unconfined deflagration) is encountered, the flame arrester provides protection for the tank’s vapor space.

End-of-Line Pressure / Vacuum Conservation Vents w/ Flame Arresters

Protectoseal Series No. 830, Pressure / Vacuum Conservation Vent with Flame Arrester, is designed to prevent costly evaporation losses, tank rupture due to over-pressure, and collapse due to vacuum. The flame arrester protects tank against fire and explosion caused by exterior sources of ignition. Pallets in the vent housing minimize air and vapor loss as the tank “breathes”. They open and close just enough to maintain safe working pressures and avoid damage to the tank. The flame arrester is mounted externally and is only exposed to vapors when venting.

End-of-Line Rectangular Plate Flame

END-OF-LINE RECTANGULAR PLATE FLAME ARRESTERProtectoseal Series No. 860 End-of-Line Rectangular Plate Flame Arresters are installed where it is not necessary to conserve vapor losses but where low flash point liquids must be protected against fire and explosion from exterior sources of ignition. The flame arrester element is mounted to the arrester housing but is easily removable to facilitate inspection and maintenance. These flame arresters are designed to provide maximum air flow consistent with operating efficiency, fire protection and low cost maintenance

End-of-Line Crimped Metal Flame Arresters

END-OF-LINE CRIMPED METAL FLAME ARRESTERSThe Protectoseal Series Nos. 27000, 29000 and 31000, End-of-Line, Crimped Metal Flame Arresters are installed where it is not necessary to conserve vapor losses but is necessary to protect against fire and explosion from external sources of ignition. These arresters are installed on the end of a tank or process vent pipe. Vapors are allowed to escape into the atmosphere and air can be drawn in through the specially designed flame arrester grid assemblies. They have been certified for use with the following chemical vapor mixtures as defined in the National Electric Code (NEC) Article 500:
