Valve sizing
Application data in.
Confidence out.
A valve is only right when it is right for the application. TVI helps size and validate pressure relief valves, size actuators, and document the complete valve package before it reaches your process.
Why sizing matters
Valve sizing is not a catalog lookup.
Process conditions, failure scenarios, flow behavior, pressure, temperature, valve configuration, and actuator demands all shape the final selection.
Start with the process.
Define the application, operating conditions, flow basis, upset scenario, and performance requirements before choosing equipment.
Size for the actual case.
Use the appropriate software and methodology for the fluid, flow condition, required capacity, valve type, and actuator demand.
Make the choice reviewable.
Provide sizing, validation, and package information that helps engineering, maintenance, and procurement understand what was selected and why.
Sizing capabilities
Two disciplines. One application-first approach.
TVI supports both the pressure relief calculation and the automation package—helping each component match the process conditions and required performance.
Farris SizeMaster sizing
TVI uses Farris SizeMaster to size and validate pressure relief valves against supplied application requirements and process conditions.
- Required capacity
- Discharge area
- Valve selection
Vapor, steam, liquid, and two-phase flow
SizeMaster supports multiple flow conditions, including recognized approaches for two-phase applications that require more than a basic single-phase calculation.
- Vapor
- Steam + liquid
- Two-phase
Valve actuator sizing
TVI uses applicable manufacturer sizing tools to help ensure the actuator is properly matched to the valve, service conditions, and application requirements.
- Manufacturer software
- Application review
- Actuator selection
Complete automation package verification
TVI’s proprietary valve automation system helps verify that the valve, actuator, accessories, and package details are built to the customer’s specifications.
- Valve + actuator
- Accessories
- Customer specifications
Sized separately. Verified together.
Beyond component selection
A valve package is a system—not a pile of parts.
A correctly sized valve can still fall short if the actuator or package configuration does not match the application. TVI connects the sizing work across the valve, actuator, and supporting package details.
- ✓ Application-specific valve selection
- ✓ Properly matched actuator
- ✓ Supporting controls and accessories
- ✓ Package built to customer specifications
What to expect
A clear path from application to selection.
The quality of the result depends on the quality of the application information. TVI helps clarify the inputs, complete the sizing work, and provide usable documentation.
Gather
Collect the process conditions, fluid information, required capacity, pressure and temperature data, valve type, and operating expectations.
Calculate
Apply SizeMaster or the appropriate manufacturer actuator-sizing tool to the defined application and flow conditions.
Select
Identify the valve series, size, orifice, actuator, and configuration appropriate for the supplied requirements.
Verify
Review the complete package against pressure, temperature, flow, torque, material, accessory, and customer specification requirements.
Document
Provide the requested sizing, validation, and product data sheets so the selection can move forward with clear supporting information.
Tools, training + documentation
Support that continues beyond the calculation.
SizeMaster is now a web-based Farris engineering platform for pressure relief valve sizing and selection. TVI can help customers use the tool, coordinate factory or on-site training with Farris, and provide sizing and validation sheets for requested applications at no charge.
Before sizing begins
Useful answers, up front.
What information does TVI need to size a relief valve?+
The exact inputs depend on the application, but typically include the fluid, flow basis and required capacity, set pressure, relieving temperature, backpressure, overpressure scenario, and relevant process conditions. Send what you have and TVI will help identify what is still needed.
Can TVI support two-phase flow sizing?+
Yes. Farris SizeMaster includes methods for two-phase flow sizing in addition to vapor, steam, and liquid applications.
Can TVI size the actuator as well as the valve?+
Yes. TVI can use manufacturer-provided actuator sizing software to help match the actuator to the valve and application, then provide supporting data sheets.
Is SizeMaster installed on our computers?+
SizeMaster is currently a web-based Farris platform accessed through a modern browser. TVI can help customers understand the tool and available training options.
Does TVI provide sizing and validation sheets?+
Yes. TVI provides requested sizing and validation sheets for customer applications at no charge.
