When should a lifting lever be used on a relief valve?

A lifting lever should be used when the application is air, steam, or water operating over 140F.

When selecting a lever for an application, don’t just look at the controlling scenario.  Review all relieving scenarios to ensure the correct lever is selected.  For instance, if the controlling scenario is air or steam, the first response would be to select an open lever.  However, if one of the scenarios is liquid, the customer may want to select a packed lever to protect against the liquid relieving scenario leaking to the environment.

Keep in mind, thermal fluid heaters should not have a lever installed.
